    Phone Proof at Denver Airport

Same channel, same week. Dennis on Local Service Spotlight: Real Proof Beats AI Polish: E-E-A-T From Your Own Phone (26 August 2026). Then on the 29th he sat next to me at DEN with a phone on the table and no lav.

The teaching video is his. The airport tape is ours. I am not going to pretend I presented at Local Service Spotlight. I am going to put the phone recording where a stranger can press play.

E-E-A-T from a phone. We did the assignment the same week he published the lecture.

    What counts as proof here

On episode one he was almost paranoid about proving we had ice cream the night before — six flavors, lavender, pistachio — because Google can corroborate a real evening. The hike is the same class of proof. GPS, stills, other people in frame, a cardboard elevation sign. Not a generated crew photo.

When YouTube has a handle, these cuts go public there too. Until then the Descript share is the player.

The Magic Berry I Just Lived

This YouTube is Dennis Yu on the Local Service Spotlight channel, published 26 August 2026: The Magic Berry Principle: Why AI Can’t Fake Your Reputation. I did not host it. I lived it three days later.

The berry is the thing you cannot generate. A 14er with operators you met on Thursday. An hour on tape where you admit you have no personal brand site. A cardboard sign at 14,065 feet. AI can polish the caption. It cannot sit on the rock.

Roanin Podkin on Mt Bierstadt with operators — the berry, not the polish
The Magic Berry for this week is the mountain and the chair, not a generated testimonial.

What I recorded instead of faking it

Episode one. The airport chair. The summit conversation with a camera on a tripod. That is the inventory. The Content Factory line is Produce, Process, Post, Promote. Produce already happened. This site is Post.

If you want Dennis’s teaching cut, watch the embed. If you want my week, start with Days with Roanin.

  • 14er in the Morning, Airport Tape at Night

14er in the Morning, Airport Tape at Night

14er in the morning. Airport tape at night. I hiked Mt Bierstadt with people I had met two days ago, then Dennis Yu sat me down at Denver International Airport until I had to go for a 7:20 flight.

The full Studio Sound cut is 22 minutes 15 seconds. Phone, no lav. Suitcase out of frame. This is the sister page to episode one.

Roanin Podkin and Dennis Yu at Denver International Airport
DEN, 29 August 2026. The last line on the recording is my flight.

    What is on this tape

The hike as trust, not as a vendor outing. SDR as a title that reads as hassle. Jason inviting me on the mountain. Seven ICP demos at that workshop — four verbal, one still working. Change the public title. Owners buy trust. Chop yesterday’s podcast. Look back in 90 days.

The other stories on this site unpack those pieces. This page is the whole chair.

  • Owners Buy Trust, Not the Cheaper Install

Owners Buy Trust, Not the Cheaper Install

On the mountain I asked Jason Amato about the psychology of the owners he talks to. I told him I present Avoca as value: use this, drive more revenue, if you can finish the rest of the business that comes with more revenue. He said no. It is literally all about trust.

His install story, in my words on the airport tape: the owner hears material and labor. One shop is $75. The guy down the road is $50. If they think the install is the same, they take cheaper. They do not see the premium. They do trust the relationship.

Roanin Podkin at the Mt Bierstadt elevation sign after talking with operators
Jason’s point on the mountain, then Dennis’s chair at DEN. Owners buy trust.

    What that does to go-to-market

If owners buy trust, then my job is not a louder economic case. It is to be in rooms where trust already exists, and to leave a public trail so the next owner already knows me. Capture the conversations on video. Chop Friday’s first podcast. Use the Bierstadt footage. Put it on a site.

Dennis added the plate-taking version: tell them you are taking another thing off their plate. Missed calls after hours. That is money. Frame the title from their side, not from Avoca’s org chart.

  • Retire by 30 Is on My Wall

Retire by 30 Is on My Wall

One thing I have on my wall that I wake up to every morning is retire by 30. Retirement, for me, is when you stop sacrificing today for tomorrow. I told Dennis that on the airport tape after we came off Mt Bierstadt.

He retired at 25 by that definition. He also said the freedom version of that number can arrive earlier if the bills are covered and the tastes are not extravagant. I said I think so too.

Roanin Podkin on the summit of Mt Bierstadt
The wall is in Santa Barbara. The mountain was the same day as the airport chair.

The life I would be living anyway

On episode one he asked what I would do if money did not matter. Hang out with interesting people. Kilimanjaro. A 14er. We were already climbing Bierstadt the next morning. Avoca brought me to meet specific people. I also wanted to be there. If I were not paying rent, would I be in a very different scenario? In many ways I am already living the list.

That is the test I want an owner to see. Not a pitch about FIRE. A person who will hike at 5 a.m. with the same people he is supposed to “demo.”

    The hike

  • Seven ICP Demos. That Workshop.

    Seven ICP Demos. That Workshop.

Dennis asked how the workshop went. There were fewer than a dozen home-service companies. I told him the number on tape: we got seven to actually book. We had four on a verbal. One other I am still working. Everything that was ICP — companies I believe we provide value to. That excludes companies I do not think are in the ICP.

That is that room, that week. It is not a lifetime quota. It is not a ranking.

Roanin Podkin and Dennis Yu at Denver International Airport after the workshop
Denver International Airport, 29 August 2026. Phone, no lav. The number on the tape is the workshop, not a career scoreboard.

    Why he thinks it happened

He argued it was not great sales skills. It was trust in a trusted environment. Low-risk next step because they had already decided I was a good dude. Then he dated a prediction: that I will be the number-one sales-driving talent at Avoca. He said it before it is true, on purpose, so the tape exists. Look back in 90 days from 29 August 2026. A prediction is not a result. I am not going to print it as one.

    What I will not claim

I will not paste Dennis’s on-tape aside about Avoca’s raise or valuation as a company fact. I do not have that as a verified number. The workshop count I said with my own mouth is the number that belongs on this page.

Hear the number on the tape

  • SDR in a Room of Contractors

SDR in a Room of Contractors

Dennis said it out loud so I did not have to. At Jason’s mini workshop of plumbing and HVAC companies, I am an SDR at Avoca. They do voice AI. I do not need him to do the product pitch. What the room hears, if the first sentence is “SDR,” is: this is the person who will hassle me for a demo.

Roanin Podkin in the Operations Mastery Lab workshop room
Same weekend, same building. I am not a contractor. The job is to be in the room anyway.

What SDR sounds like to an owner

LinkedIn is full of fifteen-minute calendar holds. Owners already have a filter for that. If Jason Amato — who runs the workshop and is known in home services — says come hike a 14er at 5 a.m., eat triple cheeseburgers, talk about life, that filter does not fire. Dennis: that sounds like a good friend. Then the other HVAC contractors see you among people they trust. Then they will say this is a good dude. Then they will hear that you help them get efficiency through the software you work at.

They do not need the feature list first. They need peers like them using it.

    Change the public title

He argued the letters SDR instantly ruin trust. Lead with the missed-call problem, not the internal role. No plumber cares that my scoreboard is demos booked. They care that they missed revenue after hours. I said I would run names. Anything except SDR on the customer-facing line.

That is a to-do with Avoca, not a boast. The tape is the marker.

  • I Hiked a 14er with People I Met Two Days Ago

I Hiked a 14er with People I Met Two Days Ago

I hiked a 14er this morning with people I had met two days ago. Then Dennis sat me down at Denver International Airport, no lav, phone on the table, and we talked until I had to run for a 7:20 flight.

The mountain was Mt Bierstadt. The cardboard on the rocks said 14,065. I was in the grey Nike hoodie. Operators from Jason Amato’s Operations Mastery Lab were on the same summit. I am not naming every face on the trail. Dennis and Jason are the names I will put in public because the tapes already do.

Summit conversation, 29 August 2026. Camera on a tripod. Cardboard sign for the elevation. This is the room.
Roanin Podkin and a hiker at the Mt Bierstadt 14,065 cardboard sign
The sign is handwritten. The hike is not a content stunt. We were already going.

Why the hike is the opposite of a cold LinkedIn ask

In a room of contractors, SDR reads as vendor. Jason inviting me on the 14er the next morning is the opposite. Dennis’s line on the airport tape: that does not sound like a salesperson. That sounds like a friend. When HVAC owners see you among people they already trust, the guard drops. Then they will hear the product.

    What we bonded over

On the mountain it was entrepreneurial spirit and values. Retirement, for me, is when you stop sacrificing today for tomorrow. That is on my wall. Dennis retired at 25 by that definition of freedom, not by a yacht. I said I think I can get there too if the tastes are not extravagant.

  • Perceived Influence to the Real Thing

Perceived Influence to the Real Thing

I asked Dennis Yu when perceived influence becomes influence. His answer on episode one: it is always perceived, until you sit down and eat the food.

CNN is perceived. The contractor who actually fixes the unit is real. The five-star restaurant you have never entered is still a rumor. Then you eat. Then your firsthand experience becomes perceived influence for the next person.

The room we were actually in

He told me my IQ was too high for the question. We were hanging out because Jason Amato put this conference together. Great conference. People said great things about it. That is the simple version of building perceived influence: be in the room the operators already trust, then do the work so the next room is earned.

Potential versus kinetic. Most people collect the invitation and leave it as potential. I stayed for the mountain the next morning. That is the kinetic half.

    What this is not

This is not a lecture on personal branding. I did not have a site when we hit record. I said so on tape. The site is a byproduct of recording the conversation and putting it where a stranger can inspect it.

If you want the method in Dennis’s voice from the same week, he published The Magic Berry Principle on the Local Service Spotlight channel. That video is his. This article is mine, from the hour we actually sat.

The conversation is the proof. The logo on my pullover is Avoca. The work is still to be known as a person, not as a demo-booker.

  • Days with Roanin — Episode 1, with Dennis Yu

Days with Roanin — Episode 1, with Dennis Yu

I called it episode one. The working title on the tape is Days with Roanin. I sat down with Dennis Yu in Broomfield on 28 August 2026 and we picked up a conversation we had already started: how you choose people, how perceived influence becomes real, and how an SDR at Avoca uses that loop without turning into a tools pitch.

The recording is on the Local Service Spotlight Descript drive as an unlisted share until a YouTube handle exists. This page is the written hub. Quotes are from the Studio Sound cut (54 minutes 11 seconds). I said my own name wrong once on tape. The spelling is Roanin.

Broomfield, 28 August 2026. I am in the Avoca pullover. Dennis is in the Dunk hoodie. Phone on the table.

    Why we hit record

I asked him, as somebody who has a lot of freedom, what he looks for when he chooses people to work with. His first filter was not a spreadsheet. Find someone who has already done the thing you want. Then, simpler than that: who do you like spending time with. Friendship first. The technical calculation comes after, if it comes at all.

He used the heart-surgeon test. You cannot audit the surgery. You use reviews, friends, patients. For a contractor, the reviews are perceived influence. The job on your HVAC system is the real thing. They are two sides of the same coin. You cannot have one without the other.

    Jason put the conference together

He pulled me out of the esoteric version. We were in that room because Jason Amato put the conference together. That is perceived influence. A couple of days later it is actual influence, because I ate the food. Potential versus kinetic. Most people leave it as potential.

    If money did not matter

He asked what I would do if I were not paying rent. I said I would hang out with interesting people and go down the list of things I have not done yet — Kilimanjaro, a 14er. We were already climbing Mt Bierstadt the next morning. Avoca brought me to meet specific people. I also wanted to be there. That is not a trade-off. That is still doing the SDR job and the life I want in the same week.

    Is the mission visible?

I do not post much on LinkedIn. Person to person, I think the mission is obvious. He asked if it is visible publicly. This recording is the start of multiplying that. He asked if I had a personal brand site. I said no. The site is the byproduct, not the goal.

    Close

I closed it as podcast number one. He said we will see each other on the mountain. We did.
